Getting Started

Prerequisites

Before you can use this Homey app, you need:

  • Upstairs Smart Stairs hardware: You must have the physical Upstairs Smart Stairs installed in your home.
  • Upstairs account: An active Upstairs account with your Smart Stairs registered and configured.
  • Homey Pro: This app is currently only available for Homey Pro.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Install the app

  • Navigate to the following URL: Upstairs Smart Stairs | Homey
  • Log in with your Homey account if prompted.
  • Click the Install App button to add the app to your Homey.

Step 2: Verify installation (Optional)

You can confirm that the app was installed correctly before adding a device:

  • In the Homey Mobile App:
    1. Go to More → Apps.
    2. Check that Upstairs Smart Stairs appears in the list of installed apps.
  • In the Homey Web App:
    1. Click the ⚙️ Gear icon in the bottom-left corner to open Settings.
    2. Scroll down to the list of installed apps.
    3. Verify that Upstairs Smart Stairs is listed there.

Step 3: Add Your Smart Stairs Device

  • Open the Homey Web App or Homey Mobile App.
  • Go to the Devices pane.
  • Click or tap the + (plus) button to add a new device.
  • Search for and select Upstairs Smart Stairs from the list of available apps.
  • Choose Smart Stairs as the device type.
  • Click or tap Connect.
  • When prompted, log in with your Upstairs account credentials (email and password).
  • After successful login, a list of Smart Stairs installations linked to your Upstairs account will be displayed.
  • Select the staircase or staircases you want to add to Homey.

Step 4: Configure Persistent Colors (Optional)

During the pairing process, you'll be presented with a checkbox to enable Persist color via schedule. This option allows you to fully control the lighting via Homey without interference from the Upstairs official app schedules.

  • If you enable this option, any color changes made through Homey will be persistent and not overridden by existing motion or daily schemas from the official app.
  • If you skip this during pairing, you can always enable it later in the device's Advanced Settings. See Persist Colors for more details.

If this setting is not enabled, color changes made via Homey are "live" and may revert to the original schema after a power cycle or when motion animations complete.

Motion animations are the step-by-step lighting effects triggered when someone walks up or down the stairs.

Step 5: Complete Setup

  • Follow Homey's on-screen instructions to complete setup and assign each device to its respective zone.

Step 6: Verify Device Addition (Optional)

You can confirm that the device was added correctly:

  • Go to the Devices pane in the Homey app.
  • Check that each Smart Stairs device you added appears in the list and is responsive (you can try turning the lights on/off or adjusting brightness/color).
  • If devices do not appear, try repeating the add device process

Step 7: Done

Your Smart Stairs devices are now available in Homey.

You can:

  • Control the lights directly (on/off, brightness, color)
  • Include them in Flows for automation based on motion, time of day, or other triggers
  • Integrate them with other Homey devices and smart home routines
